My god! Some people are still interested in this project.
Ok, some quick notes:
- This was originally developed against 9.0.6 (i think). So its a little out of date and the code needs updating all over.
- Yes there are bugs. We stopped working on it due to extreme lack of interest and no one will to help make modules, blocks or even test it for us.
- The community that was driving this project has mainly moved to facebook now, making my personal reason for doing this voided.
- Yes, if I were to start over, I would do it *very* differently. (Including scrapping all the javascript and starting over with the page designer which was very messy).
- No, i'm not sure if I want to start over. I don't mind helping out with bugs right now, but I'm about to go travelling for 3 months, so now is not the time to re-start this project.
- Would I want to restart this project anyway? Lack development (or should I say developers?) in the dragonfly community (and various sub-communities) leads me to think that it would be a lost cause?
- I'm very sorry for my lack of contributions to this project. A promotion at work has kept me out of open source dev work for a little while.
Finally, if you start a new topic with some technical questions or requests for help on this, then I will do my absolute best to help out over the next 3 weeks till I leave. After that, I am quite happy to give svn commit access to anyone who feels they would like to continue the project.
When I get back from travelling I will then assess the situation again and decide on whether or not to persist with this project.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Dave

I tried to install this quite a long time ago and couldn't even get it working. I'd like to see something released that requires minimal to no code work to get it to work. You always talked about putting this or that feature in it and it never happened. The reason I didn't contribute to development was because it was never finished. I usually come along after something is finished or at least a good solid first release before I start tinkering. So I did make the right decision by not pursuing this mod because if I had then I'd be left high and dry. No offense but that's kind of where things sit with this project and many others like it such as the calendar, news module, coppermine, and the list goes on...

Ok, perhaps I phrased that badly then. Yes I had 2 or 3 people interested and willing to test it. But that was it. And i'm certainly not blaming anyone except maybe the dragonfly devs themselves for causing all the disruption in the community.
The overall lack of interest in the module was pretty disheartening and certainly not very motivating. This combined with the limbo state in which dragonfly itself was in (forums being shut down being a prime example), made it very difficult to know what to do.
When I announced the project on the dragonfly forums I expected some interest from people - maybe a couple of people to suggest a module two - or at least maybe a block! But there was literally no interest at all.
We took a break at this point to wait a week or so to see if the forum topic would get picked up or commented on at all - or the news item. A week turned into a month etc.
These things (combined with the facebook move of my community) all contributed to bringing about our lack of interest.
But yes, ultimately, its our fault for not continuing with the project anyway.
As for various suggestions and comments I have seen, I will try to answer quickly:
Comment: I'd like to see something released that requires minimal to no code work to get it to work.
Answer: If you wanted this integrated with the "Your_Account" module and/or use some features such as the "themeing" of personal pages, then dragonfly provided absolutely no method of doing this any other way. Some code had to be hacked. And I was able to get no help from dragonfly people with a mind to solving these issues.
However, with minimal effort, it would be possible to make a standalone version of this without these feature. I think any module developer should be able to see this or do it. If there is enough interest, I'd be happy to do this myself. It shouldn't take very long.
Comment: I have no faith that you'd ever pick up this project again in any form. It just won't happen no matter the circumstance.
Answer: Yes, I could see thats how it must look. I am not exactly relishing the chance to dive back into this. And as I said before I wouldn't do it for a while.
However, if a developer would like to help out, then I am happy to open commit access and I will definitely help out up till I leave for travelling. And I would re-assess when I got back as to what to do then.
Comment: This doesn't work / theres a bug here /there.
Answer: Yep, undoubtedly. A new version of dragonfly was released which it doesn't work with (although can quite easily with a small amount of dev), and we hadn't done much testing on it anyway. We didn't then continue to work on it because of the original lack of interest.
Comment: You had us to test it!
Answer: Yes, and I offer my thanks to the few of you that did help out back when we worked on this and I also offer my apologies for not continuing with it and letting you down.
Question: What now?
Answer: I am willing to do some limited dev to bring this project in line with the latest version. And also perhaps create a standalone version with some features cut out. I will not do any more unless another developer joins in. Volunteers anyone?
I have plenty of architecture plans and ideas for this project (as i'm sure others do), but no time to do it.
The question I ask in return is, is it worth it?
Will other people be interested?
Does a decent dragonfly community really exist any more?
Can someone volunteer to take over while I am away till late decemember?
Can someone/people be found to do bugfixing and testing?

I always looked at this project with both eyes wide open. I was extremely interested to see a new profile replacement. I was just waiting for something more stable.
I think the reason that you didn't get a lot of feedback is because honestly you are much more advanced than most of the module developers and that definitely includes myself. I'd love to have enough knowledge to help but the things you are doing I don't think I could ever do. You are way up there, perhaps more than you know, which is why you aren't getting any help. We are depending on you to get the thing working. I'll make blocks and addons but you have to get it to a point where you can say" here, this is the first stable release, everyone can use it."
I realize it's impossible for you to beta and kill bugs without others help. I can't take that risk on my production sites and most don't run dev sites. I develop on my production sites because I can fix any errors quickly. The code you are creating is more than most of us can chew.
